“Invisible Grief”: New Book Offers Hope for Unmet Longings
“Invisible Grief” by Cedarville alum and pastor Drew Hensley offers hope for infertility, singleness, chronic illness and other unmet longings. Released Jan. 20, it invites honest lament before God and points to Christ’s compassion.
Unmet longings. Unanswered prayers. Unrealized dreams.
For Drew Hensley and his wife, Laura, grief is personal and familiar. While struggling with infertility, they found that healing came not through quick fixes or clichés but through the presence of others — and of God — that gave them the opportunity to be honest about their heartache.
Those experiences helped shape “,” a new book that was released on January 20 by Hensley, pastor at ONE Fellowship in Charleston, South Carolina, and writer for The Key Life Network.
“Writing this book allowed me to offer new language to not only my own grief but that of so many others,” said Hensley. “I had to learn to bring the whole story honestly before God without editing it.”
Ĺ alumnus says pastoral training shaped a theology of lament
After earning a degree in pastoral studies from Ĺ in 2007, Hensley understood the importance of sound doctrine. But he also knew people needed more than correct answers — they needed the compassion that Jesus displayed.
“My training at Cedarville helped me see that the Bible makes room for lament, doubt and long seasons of waiting,” said Hensley. “It taught me that faith isn’t about having everything figured out — it’s about learning to trust God in the middle of what isn’t. That foundation has shaped how I walk with people now. I want to be faithful to Scripture and gentle with stories. Those things belong together.”
“Invisible Grief” encourages believers to bring their grief honestly before God, whether it is infertility, singleness, chronic illness or another unmet longing weighing on their hearts. Through his writing, Hensley prays people find hope in the heart of Christ.
“Jesus doesn’t minimize our losses,” said Hensley. “He enters into them. He wept, suffered and was misunderstood. But through his resurrection, he secured a future where nothing broken will remain broken.”
